An induction cooktop heats the vessel directly using electricity. It can be useful as a backup when the gas cylinder runs out, or for a small home. Before buying, check the points below so that it suits your cooking and your vessels.
Step 1: Check your vessels first
Induction only works with vessels that have a magnetic base. To test yours, hold a fridge magnet to the bottom. If it sticks firmly, the vessel should work. A flat base works best. Many aluminium, copper, glass and clay vessels will not work unless they have an induction base.
Step 2: Choose the power
Higher wattage can heat faster, but it also draws more electricity when running at full power. Many home models are listed at around 1200 to 2100 watts.
| Your need | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Backup, or 1 to 2 people | A lower-power, simple model may be enough |
| Daily cooking for a family | A higher-power model with a good range of heat settings |
| Big vessels, pressure cooker | Check the cooking area size and weight limit |
Step 3: Controls and useful features
- Push buttons or touch: touch panels are simple to wipe. Push buttons can be easier to use with wet hands.
- Indian menu presets: handy, but you can also use the normal heat levels.
- Timer and auto-off: useful if you often leave the kitchen while cooking.
- Overheat and voltage protection: helpful in areas where the voltage goes up and down. Check that the listing mentions it.
Step 4: Think about electricity and safety
- A 2000-watt cooktop at full power for 1 hour uses about 2 units of electricity. Most cooking uses less, as you do not stay on full power.
- Use a good wall socket suited to the wattage, and avoid overloaded extension boards.
- Keep air vents clear, and keep the area dry.
- Anyone with a pacemaker should read the manual and ask their doctor before using one.
Step 5: Check warranty and service
Look at the warranty period and whether the brand has a service centre near you. Reading recent buyer reviews can also show common problems.

Frequently asked questions
Can induction replace my gas stove?
It can for many dishes, but it stops during a power cut. Many homes keep it as a second cooking option.
Can I use my pressure cooker?
Only if it has an induction base. Try the magnet test, or check the cooker’s label.
Why does it make a humming sound?
A light hum or fan sound is common, particularly at high power. If you notice a new or loud noise, stop using it and contact service.
